Leema

The physician's assistant for medical cannabis treatment recommendations

Patient page_Screen_2.png
Introduction

Overview

Leema is a web-based system that collects usage data of medical cannabis patients and its effects. The data is collected using Leema's Mobile APP.

The purpose of my work was to create an early bird prototype for the physician's side, which uses the Leema system's data for treatment protocols, suggestions, and insights.

Leema Sturcture

The Challenge

The entrepreneur wanted Leema to be as efficient as it can while maintaining optimal data and info for doctors to use Leema.

Throughout the work on this project the challenges I encountered were:

The system needs to be modified according to the type of doctor

Obtain the essential information in order to reach a conclusion quickly

Goals & Visions

Of all Leema's goals and objectives, the doctor's side of the system, in terms of UX goals included:

Quick and accurate

physician's analysis

Quick access to

cannabis databases

Efficient support for treatment protocol

Before starting the project, I've listed objectives that would serve as the project’s success criteria in terms of the user experience:

  • Maintain information clear and organized.

  • The system needs to be intuitive for different types of users.

  • The system needs to be modified according to the physician type.

Research

My research consisted mainly of user/physician interviews,

and research of parallel worlds such as dashboards, etc.

User Interviews

I've contacted several Doctors and most of them were pain physicians that included medical cannabis in their treatment. The interviews focused on understanding and prioritizing their needs while receiving a patient and the "onboarding" process of a new patient at their clinic.

Some of the questions that were asked:

Assuming your patient has passed all the relevant tests and examinations and is found eligible for medical cannabis, how do you prescribe him or her one treatment or another?

"I check symptoms, tests and I see that according to the pain questionnaire how the pain affects his life, in what form, frequency, level of pain and other variables that help me quantify the patient's suffering,

I will give him a low THC dose and low CBD for start and see how this dose affects him..."

- Dr. Cohen, 45

Are there parameters that you place more emphasis on when customizing the treatment? And can you name them here?

"Unfortunately the experience we have today is quite small and only in specific cases I know to recommend the patient to start with a high

dose from the beginning...

The cases I do refer to:

- If the patient consumes (probably illegally) Cannabis

already and is aware of the effects of the treatment..."

- Dr. Tamam, 52

Man in Sweater

If there are patients for whom the treatment is too "strong", can you estimate how many of your patients they are?

"For about 10 percent of patients the treatment may feel intense as the psychoactive effects can be unpleasant for patients who are not used to such a feeling, so it is important to give treatment with CBD high enough to moderate

the effect of THC..."

- Dr. Cornfeld, 47

Findings & Insights

Preliminary information collection

Get as much data as they can gather:

  • general patient detail

  • medicine taken

  • patient's mood changes

Comparison and analysis

Access to the Leema database allows the attending physician to optimally adjust to patients' needs.

Time saver and variety

There is a need for a faster data analysis procedure for the doctor based on cross-referencing the data compared to patients with the same data.

Connect the patient

Since Leema's main feature is monitoring patients' treatments and efficacy, it was important to collect data from the start.

Information Architecture

After gathering all the information that needed to be taken and considered I've built this doctor's map:

User Journey

The next step of my process was to define the overall user flow of the system and make sure the different parts of the experience were connecting.

The structure had to reflect the goals mentioned above, so the doctor could quickly get to the ideal treatment decision and share it with the patient

Goals:

- Decide on the best treatment for each patient

- Make the patient feel comfortable

- Make the patient cooperate

- Time-saving

Motivation:

- Provide the best treatment in fast and efficient way

Pain-points:

- lack of available cannabis usage database

- time-wasting process of gathering the BPI(Brief

   Pain Inventory) data

- unsatisfied with the current treatment protocol

Use case:

- mid-level user

- fills out forms

- inspecting medical examinations

- using hospital software

Wireframes

After gathering all the information along with the insights from the research through collecting inspiration I came to the following results:

New Patient Wizard

The patient sets an appointment, receives a link via SMS to Leema's website, and fills in his personal details, medications in use, and a pain questionnaire.

Existing patient

The existing and returning patient scenario

After the doctor studies & observes the findings and insights he can go to Leema's treatment assistant (on the left side of the screen) to review its recommendation and share it with a patient using the Leema APP.

Overview Dashboard

Realizing that the physicians need the system mainly for treatment protocol, it was important to help him advance to the patient dashboard as fast as possible and also to sync with his patient's schedule.

Patient Dashboard

The patient dashboard is the most critical

place at Leema's doctor's system.

It needs to be efficient and clear to read the patient's values and the way he uses cannabis

Highlighted Features:

  1. Amount of uses and their effect

  2. Patient's mood vs. the previous state

  3. Dailey doses

Patient Dashboard - Recommendation

The most important section in the patient dashboard is the treatment recommendation section.

The critical parameters:

  1. THC & CBD doses

  2. "Consumption Method" filter

  3. "Share To Patient" button

Visual Design

As for the UI of the system, I have decided to use monochromatic colors of blue since it is a medical-related system and made a few adaptations for some of the elements.

Takeaways

  • It was very educational and fulfilling to take part in a life-changing project that could really contribute to people in need.

  • I enjoyed developing ideas with the client and seeing how the project progresses, as more important details are discovered for a better UX.
